A switch from an electric cylinder in a cupboard to a Rinnai continuous flow unit on an exterior wall costs more because of the gas line, the new pipework, and the wall mount work. Most electric and gas storage cylinders are designed for 10-15 years. Continuous flow gas units typically last 15-20 years with servicing. Heat pump cylinders sit in a similar range. Hard water and high mains pressure shorten the life of any system; replacing the sacrificial anode every 5 years on a storage cylinder extends it.
