No hot water this morning? Cylinder leaking from the base? Cold runs in the middle of a shower? We diagnose hot water cylinder faults on the day, replace failed cylinders like-for-like, and install electric, gas storage, continuous flow, and heat pump systems across Auckland. Certified plumbers and gas fitters in one team, so the install and the gas connection are handled in a single visit.
We get called for the same handful of cylinder problems every week. Here's what we deal with most.
Could be a tripped element, a failed thermostat, a blown gas igniter, or a tripped earth leakage breaker on the switchboard. We diagnose electric and gas systems on the same visit. Most no-hot-water faults are sorted on the day, often without replacing the cylinder.
You used to get a full shower; now it's lukewarm at the four-minute mark. Usually means a failed lower element, sediment build-up reducing usable capacity, or a tempering valve mixing too much cold. We test under load and identify which one before quoting a fix.
Water pooling on the floor under the cylinder means the inner tank has corroded through. Once a cylinder leaks from the base it cannot be repaired - the steel is gone. We isolate it on the day, drain it, and replace it. Often same-day if we have stock that fits.
Brown, orange, or smelly hot water from the tap (cold runs clear) means the sacrificial anode is gone and the steel tank is rusting from the inside. Replacing the anode buys time on a younger cylinder. On an older one it's a sign the tank itself is on the way out.
There are four common hot water systems in Auckland homes. Each one suits a different layout, family size, and energy setup.
The most common system in older Auckland homes. Stores hot water in an insulated tank and reheats on a controlled rate overnight. Simple, reliable, and the cheapest to install when you're swapping like-for-like. Best suited to households where the existing electrics and cupboard layout still work.
A storage cylinder heated by a gas burner instead of an electric element. Recovers temperature faster than electric, which suits larger households running back-to-back showers. Needs gas supply and a flue. We handle the cylinder, the gas line, and the certification in-house.
Wall-mounted unit that heats water on demand instead of storing it. No tank, no cupboard space, no waiting for recovery. Rinnai (the A26 is the workhorse) and equivalents. Ideal when you want endless hot water or want the cylinder cupboard back.
Pulls heat from the air to warm the cylinder, using roughly a third of the power of a standard electric element. Higher install cost, lower running cost. Suits homeowners focused on long-term energy use.
Not every cylinder fault means a new tank. Here's how we decide.
We test the cylinder live: element resistance, thermostat function, gas pressure on gas systems, anode condition where accessible, and a check for corrosion at the base. You hear what's actually wrong before any quote.
Most storage cylinders are designed for 10-15 years. A 4-year-old cylinder with a failed element is a cheap fix - plenty of life left. Replacing the element on a 14-year-old tank that's about to leak from the base is throwing good money after bad. We tell you which side of that line yours sits on.
If repair is genuinely sensible, we quote the repair. If replacement makes more sense, we quote that. If it's borderline, we quote both with our honest call on which we'd choose if it were our own house.
Most older Auckland homes have the hot water cylinder in a hallway or laundry cupboard. That cupboard is prime storage if the cylinder isn't in it. We relocate cylinders to:
The work covers removing the existing cylinder, running new pipework underfloor to the new location, blanking off the old pipe penetrations cleanly, and recommissioning or installing a new system in the new spot. Going from an electric cylinder in a cupboard to a continuous flow unit on the wall is a single job for us - cylinder removal, gas line, wall mount, and the council compliance certificate handled in-house.
We don't publish a "from $X" price for cylinders because the variables move the number too much. What we do is quote on real factors, on the phone if it's straightforward, on site if it needs a look first. Free quotes during business hours.
Most cylinder jobs involving a gas appliance need a separate gas fitter to sign off the connection. Louis is certified for both plumbing and gas fitting. Cylinder install and gas connection in the same visit, by the same team. No second tradie, no second invoice.
Electric, gas storage, continuous flow gas, and heat pump. We install and service all four, so when we quote, we're recommending the system that fits your home, not the one we happen to install.
A failed cylinder isn't a "we'll book you in next week" job. We diagnose on the day, isolate the leak or fault, and where stock allows we replace the cylinder same-day. Most callouts are resolved in a single visit.

It depends on the system, the size, and the install location. A like-for-like 180L electric cylinder swap in an accessible cupboard sits at the lower end. A switch from an electric cylinder in a cupboard to a Rinnai continuous flow unit on an exterior wall costs more because of the gas line, the new pipework, and the wall mount work. We quote on site after we've seen what's there. Free quotes during business hours.
Most electric and gas storage cylinders are designed for 10-15 years. Continuous flow gas units typically last 15-20 years with servicing. Heat pump cylinders sit in a similar range. Hard water and high mains pressure shorten the life of any system; replacing the sacrificial anode every 5 years on a storage cylinder extends it.
Depends on three things. Is gas already at the property, or do you need a connection installed? How big is the household and how often do you run out of hot water on the current system? And what does the gas vs electric running cost look like for your usage? We walk you through all three when we quote so the decision is based on numbers, not a sales pitch.
Rough guide: 135L for one or two people, 180L for a family of three, 250L for four people, 300L+ for five or more or homes with two bathrooms running simultaneously. We confirm the right size on site based on your fixtures, household size, and shower habits.
